The Longest Birthday is the first story in the Manchester Chronicles, introducing Kieran Hawthorne and Heather Prescott.
Summary[]
In July of 2008 Joanne Gallagher is working outside of Manchester to destroy the Winterborne Armband. James Moncrieff, Catherine Moncrieff and their enforcers arrive but fail to stop Joanne from destroying the artifact. Joanne is then captured and taken away along with Bridget O'Dwyer. As the Moncrieffs leave the scene a car accident is noted to have occurred nearby.
A month later Kieran Hawthorne discovers time is frozen after waking up at home. Unsure of what's going on, Kieran slowly begins building a life for himself in his frozen world. Eventually, Kieran encounters Heather Prescott, who like him is not frozen, it revealed the pair were involved in the accident the previous month. After spending time together with the pair bond a bit, though they remain mistrustful, and eventually discover the site where Joanne destroyed the Winterborne Armband, right near where they had their accident. Later, after returning to town, the pair learn to both unfreeze time and freeze it again when holding hands. While Heather is excited by the possibilities their newfound ability brings them Kieran wants nothing to do with it, simply helping Heather clean up the mess they both made before going their separate ways. As the two part, however, Kieran does admit they should probably consider investigating what happened to them.
Meanwhile, in another part of Manchester, a mysterious woman is revealed to have also not been affected by time freezing, nor does she understand what was going on in the first place.
